Selected immigration records

While the index spans the period from 1838 to 1887, the dates of each series included varies.

• NRS-5244 Register of Applications for Assisted Passages to New South Wales, 1884–1887

Register of certificates issued to enable people in New South Wales to pay part or all of the cost of a passage for some other, nominated person from the United Kingdom to New South Wales.

• NRS-5268 Remittance List Refunds, 1855–1868

These comprise "Lists of persons towards whose passage or outfit contributions have been paid under the Rem. Regs but who for the reasons annexed have not proceeded to the Colony".

• NRS-5277 Payments from employers to Colonial Treasurer, 1854–1855

These consist of forms pasted onto the leaves of the volumes. The forms are printed, and show the name, age, and trade or calling of an intending migrant; the amount paid towards the cost of his passage and his outfit; and the name of the Clerk of Petty Sessions who forwarded the money. These volumes cover the period in which almost all sponsors were employers seeking labour.

• NRS-5324 Persons authorized to import migrants, 1838–1842

In the front of this volume is a list showing date of authority, name and address of person authorised, and number and destination of immigrants. This list serves as an index to the main list. In the latter, an entry is made under each importer's name of the date of each authority, and of either the number and destination of the immigrants or the reason for the authority's not being fulfilled.

• NRS-5269 Papers re persons proceeding to the Colony under remittance regulations, 1856–1858

They give the following details: number of application, name of emigrant, age, name of depositor, amount paid in colony for passage and outfit, additional payment required by the Commissioners and remarks. The lists in a) also record whether the emigrant sailed or defaulted. The information would appear to have been used in the compilation of the Immigration deposit journals.

The documents in the series are in two parts:

1. Lists "of persons towards whose passage or outfit contributions have been paid ... under the Rem. Regs., and who have received embarkation orders to join the ship ...". These lists appear to have been forwarded to the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales under covering letters from the Government Emigration Board, London.
2. Lists "of persons towards whose passage or outfit contributions have been paid ... under the Rem. Regs., and who have proceeded to the colony in the undermentioned ships".

• NRS-5243 Immigration Remittances [Applications from persons in the colony nominating immigrants], 1857-1895

This series contains Immigration Remittance applications and statement of refunds.

The application forms include Form A (Great Britain and Ireland) and Form B (United Kingdom). The forms contain the following information: Christian name and surname, age, whether husband or wives resident in the colony, trades or callings, where living, names and address of some persons of note to whom the references can be made respecting the emigrants, and amount paid to Government Immigration Office (amount applied to passage, applied towards Outfit and total).

The Statement of Refunds Form includes the immigrant application form, letters from nominated person asking for refund, receipt for refund from the Assisted Immigration department, a copy of letters to the nominee and the original passage certificate. Front page includes registration number, deposit number and a statement of refund.
