About Uncle Kevin “Sooty” Welsh
Uncle Kevin “Sooty” Welsh is a Wayilwan Elder and artist based in Coonamble, in north-western NSW on Wayilwan Country.
He came to ceramics later in life, after exploring other creative outlets including woodwork, photography, and painting. For the past 8–10 years, ceramics has become his primary focus. His hand-built ceramic pots and objects draw inspiration from cultural artefacts and the natural environment, with distinctive markings etched into the clay that reference traditional designs carved into trees by his Wayilwan ancestors.
Deeply committed to community and cultural strength, Uncle Sooty believes in the creative potential of his people and is passionate about inspiring others—especially young people. Through his practice, he continues to share culture, resilience, and pride, encouraging future generations to see what is possible.
