History of Sydney's Department Stores
Department stores once dominated central Sydney. Before the advent of suburban shopping centres in the late 1950s, most department stores were located in Sydney’s CBD, in what were considered some of the finest buildings of their day. These imposing buildings altered the skyline physically, and attracted huge numbers to the city throughout the year – but especially at Christmas.
You are invited to explore Sydney’s grand emporia. First, step inside the David Jones Elizabeth Street flagship store on a guided tour and discover how the history of David Jones is interwoven with the story of this landmark building, from its original construction to its recent refurbishment. Then join Museums of History NSW Curator Michael Lech on a walking tour to discover where other shops such as Anthony Hordern & Sons and Mark Foy’s were located, what buildings survive and how department stores became such a significant feature of Sydney’s social history.
