The Museums of History NSW Dr Zeny Edwards OAM Student Research Fellowship

The Museums of History NSW Dr Zeny Edwards OAM Student Research Fellowship offers students enrolled at a NSW university the opportunity to undertake an eight-week fellowship at Museums of History NSW.

About the fellowship

The principal purpose of the fellowship is to give participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the history of NSW while contributing to public knowledge of MHNSW’s collections, which include historic buildings and sites and related objects, as well as the NSW State Archives Collection and the Caroline Simpson Library Collection.

The program will offer a focused period of research based on selected MHNSW collections, under the guidance of staff. Fellows will be assigned a mentor to guide their research, enhancing their knowledge and expertise.

Applications

Applications open Monday 12 May 2025 at 9am AEST and close on Friday 11 July 2025 at 5pm AEST.

The program will award up to three fellowships each year. Applicants must be enrolled in third-year undergraduate or postgraduate studies, in a history, architecture or other related degree.

The following payment will support a focused period of research based on selected MHNSW collections:

  • $2,500 for third-year undergraduate students
  • $5,000 for postgraduate students

A travel bursary of $1,200 will be available for successful regional applicants to support travel and accommodation costs.

Guidelines

Fellows must:

  • be enrolled in third-year undergraduate or postgraduate studies, in a history, architecture or other related degree
    • third-year undergraduate students will require an endorsement by their course lecturer
  • be available for a period of eight weeks (excluding MHNSW Christmas shutdown period), commencing Monday 24 November 2025 and ending on Friday 30 January 2026 (the MHNSW Christmas shutdown period is from Monday 22 December 2025 to Friday 2 January 2026)
  • attend an induction morning tea at The Mint on Monday 24 November 2025
  • work a minimum of two days on site each week during the fellowship period at The Mint, Sydney, and/or the Western Sydney Records Centre, Kingswood.

Research project

Fellows will be asked to choose a research project relevant to the following topic, focusing on the Caroline Simpson Library Collection and/or the NSW State Archives Collection.

  • The role of women in architecture and applied arts/design during the 20th century in NSW.

Research deliverables

Fellows are required to:

  • provide a written report detailing the nature and outcomes of the research carried out
  • author one article (maximum 2,000 words) on the outcome of their research project, which will be edited by MHNSW for the purpose of publishing on its website, at the discretion of MHNSW
  • deliver in person or online a presentation on their research outcomes to internal and/or external stakeholders by the end of March 2026, on a date to be determined by MHNSW in consultation with the individual fellow
  • acknowledge MHNSW in any works created as a result of the fellowship.

About Dr Zeny Edwards OAM

Dr Zeny Edwards OAM is an architectural historian, heritage consultant and award-winning author and biographer. In 2020, she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in recognition of her services to the community and to heritage preservation. Currently, Dr Edwards serves as the President of the Institute for Global Peace and Sustainable Governance, Vice-President of the World Citizens Association of Australia (with a focus on Asia-Pacific relations), Coordinator of International Relations for Australian Graduate Women, and Director of the Museum of Understanding Through Tolerance and Inclusion (MUTTI).

Dr Edwards has been involved with Museums of History NSW since 2001. She is passionate about supporting the next generation of scholars by providing them with opportunities to explore the history of NSW through our places, collections and archives, supplementing their university studies with hands-on research under the guidance of industry professionals.
