Museums & Galleries of NSW
Since 2023, MHNSW has enjoyed a successful partnership with Museums & Galleries of NSW. We value our partnership highly. A key highlight to date was the inaugural Volunteer Symposium for NSW Regional and Community-Run Museums, held at The Mint on 28–29 July 2025.
Our staff also provide ongoing support for Storyplace, the Volunteer Placement program and the Standards Review Program for small museums, and other initiatives such as delivering workshops on the ground in regional NSW.
Workshops 2026
AI and Museums of History NSW
Tuesday 3 March 2026, 11am–12pm
Free online workshop
Tickets available here
You are invited to join Tim Girling-Butcher, Head of Digital & Design at Museums of History NSW (MHNSW), in this AI for beginners online workshop. Tim will discuss how he and his team use AI in their daily work, and talk about upcoming projects and the changes that AI is expected to bring to MHNSW over the next five years. There will be a Q&A at the end of the session, where you can ask Tim questions or share your experience of using this technology in a small museum.
This event is presented through a partnership between MHNSW and Museums & Galleries of NSW. It is a repeat of the session Tim gave at the Volunteer Symposium for NSW Regional and Community-Run Museums in July 2025. This workshop is devised for volunteers who work in small to medium-sized museums in regional NSW, as well as the workers who support them.
Storyplace Roadshow 2023–25
In June 2023, we began a partnership with Museums & Galleries of NSW to support its Storyplace Roadshow project.
Storyplace Roadshow is a touring program that focuses on working with regional museum staff, volunteers and collections to develop object-centred stories and associated educational resources for regional museums. MHNSW supported the roadshow by creating instructional videos and running a series of face-to-face workshops on a range of professional development topics, including collection storage, significance assessment and object-based learning.
Between July and September 2024, members of the Regional, Learning and Curatorial teams contributed facilitated workshops in Port Macquarie, Wagga Wagga and Maitland. These sessions supported regional museum staff and volunteers to strengthen their skills in assessing object significance and to develop object-centred stories and learning resources.
Before that, representatives from our Regional, Collections Care, Learning and Curatorial teams visited Tamworth (September 2023), Albury and Alstonville (March 2024), and Bathurst (May 2024) to facilitate workshops on various subjects, including collection housing and storage, developing frameworks for object-based learning activities and establishing the significance of objects in museum collections.
