Murmurations: Community Cultural Festival

Join us for a festival that celebrates migration and coming together.
This family-friendly event will take place in the courtyard of the Hyde Park Barracks and showcases First Nations culture from Australia and the Pacific taking inspiration from Tony Albert and Angela Tiatia’s artwork Murmurations.
The day will be hosted by Fa’afafine advocate, performer and entertainer Lady Tara and will begin with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Charles ‘Chicka’ Madden and smoking ceremony by Matthew Doyle.
Enjoy performances by leading Indigenous dance company Jannawi Dance Clan; Matavai Pacific Cultural Arts, champions of dance, music, performance and creative arts from across the Oceania region; respected artist Toby Cedar, who will showcase his Torres Strait and Islander heritage and Sela Vai, a Tongan-Australian choreographer and movement artist.
Listen to Indigenous cultural storyteller Gumaroy Newman, yidaki player Billy McPherson and Tongan-Australian writer and performer Winnie Dunn.
Join a drop-in weaving workshop with Dharawal weaver Clare Woolley and Samoan Facilitator Seve Faleupolu and a special weaving demonstration by Kuku Yalanji artist Ivy Minniecon.
Guitarist Joji Malani will thread contemporary indie, pop and rock influences in with the memories and influences of his Fijian culture as he responds to and interprets the Murmurations artwork.
Kids will enjoy learning about Pacific culture with lolly leis workshops. You’ll also hear about the Murmurations artwork with a series of tours led by Tony Albert and Angela Tiatia and enjoy delicious Samoan and Aboriginal food.
