Sculpture-making workshop with Kate Stehr
Join Meroogal Women’s Art Prize 2024 finalist Kate Stehr for a hands-on workshop inspired by the memories held in everyday objects.
Hosted in the grounds of Meroogal, this full-day workshop will explore sculpting and drawing in the household realm. Stehr will show you how to see the beauty in objects often regarded as mundane, such as wooden spoons, forks, spatulas and tea strainers.
The workshop will begin with a wire drawing exercise that will be used as the basis for shadow play using ink and pencil. Stehr will then expertly guide you through the sculpture-making process, showing you how to turn your everyday kitchen items into a beautiful work of art.
Included in the ticket price is a catered lunch from Black Cede, a First Nations, female-led, social enterprise cafe, and a tour of the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize 2024 exhibition, where you can see Stehr’s artwork on display.
What to bring:
- Kitchen utensils (we encourage you to bring utensils that you are happy to part with, or buy a few from a local charity shop)
- All other materials will be supplied. Please wear clothing suitable for making art.

About Kate Stehr
Kate Stehr is a sculptor based on the south coast of NSW. She has a strong focus on timber sculptural forms and her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Kate has long been interested in creating works that explore the traditional narratives that are the foundations of our cultures, as evidenced in the research and creative works she produced for her Master of Philosophy degree. She enjoys repurposing found objects, valuing their history and the memories they hold. Her works often explore the absurd or seek to thwart the perceived use of objects.
Kate graduated from the National Art School in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and completed an Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts at TAFE in 2004. She went on to complete a graduate Diploma of Education and a Master of Philosophy in Creative Arts Research at the University of Wollongong in 2008 and 2018 respectively.
