Weaving a Connection to Culture

Tarni Eastwood is a Ngiyampaa and Guringai multidisciplinary artist and curator based on Darug Country, in Western Sydney. Tarni actively facilitates weaving workshops with community to contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of traditional cultural practices.

Seve Faleupolu is a Samoan weaver and facilitator who was born and educated in New Zealand. It wasn’t until she migrated to Australia that she noticed a lack of information, education and instruction on traditional weaving techniques and started her journey to becoming an educator.

She has led weaving workshops at several cultural institutions including Bankstown Art Centre, Powerhouse Museum, Blacktown Arts Centre and Casula Powerhouse.

Tegan Murdock is a proud member of the Barkindtji tribe originating from Coomealla, Lake Victoria and the Mungo regions, and of the Yorta Yorta and Dhudaroah tribes originating from the Shepparton area. Tegan was taught to weave by her mother and she has established her own business, Ngumpie Weaving.

Dr. Virginia Keft is a proud Muruwari woman. She is a multi-disciplinary artist and curator, First Nations producer, and award-winning researcher with over 25 years’ experience working in the Arts Sector. She lives and works on Dharawal and Gadigal Country and has firm links to her community. Her practice includes weaving, painting, drawing, and sculpture and celebrates connections to place, community, and Country. Virginia brings an open and collaborative approach to her Arts and cultural practice. She has a passion for learning and a deep respect for the continuity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, knowledges, perspectives, and truth-telling. She holds a Doctorate (PhD - Medalist) from the University of Wollongong, along with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA - Distinction), and a Bachelor of Arts (BA - Class 1 Honours). Virginia is the coordinator and curator of bangawarra Art Yarns: for older and Elder mob at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia. She is the project lead for Weaving Collective, a joint initiative by Parramatta Powerhouse and Parramatta Artist Studios which will oversee the creation of a weaving garden on the site of the new Parramatta Powerhouse.

Clare Woolley (Mason) is a Dharawal woman from the La Perouse Aboriginal community, with further cultural connections to north east Victoria/south east NSW and north east NSW. She teaches traditional Aboriginal weaving techniques that have been passed down to her through generations and practicing since she was young. Passionate about sharing knowledge and history, Clare uses weaving to connect to culture and as a way to teach others.
