Becoming a Convict: Caught, Tried and Sentenced

Chapter 1

Use the virtual tour (matterport) below to explore the northern range. This area is where visitors start their museum experience and enter the first gallery, Becoming a Convict: Caught, Tried and Sentenced.

Instead of traditional written wall labels, the museum uses a story guide on an audio headset to tell the stories of the Hyde Park Barracks. Location technology and sensors activate the story guide based on where visitors are in the museum and what exhibit they are looking at.

The story guide connects visitors to the experiences of the men, women and children who lived at the Barracks through voiced by actors, and soundscapes.

The video clips below include sections of audio from the story guide. You can also listen to this audio ‘in situ’ as you explore the virtual tour.

Whose perspective is being shared in the northern range?

  • Governor Lachlan Macquarie
  • First Nations people
  • Convicts sent to Australia by boat
  • Immigrant women
  • Asylum women
  • You

Why do you think it is important for visitors to understand this perspective before entering the main building?
