A pictorial guide to identifying Australian architecture – photo collection
This collection of over 700 black and white photo prints was used to illustrate the book A pictorial guide to identifying Australian architecture by Richard Apperly, Robert Irving and Peter Reynolds, first published by Angus & Robertson, Sydney, in 1989.
Most photographs were taken by Solomon Mitchell specially for the publication. They were supplemented with photographs from the Max Freeland collection and from authors Richard Apperly and Robert Irving. Other photographs were provided by Richard Stringer, Wolfgang Sievers, Mark Strizic, Max Dupain, David Moore, John Gollings and Fritz Kos.
The book and its illustrations provide a survey of different historical styles of Australian architecture broken down into six periods: old colonial (1788–c1840), Victorian (c1840–c1890), Federation (c1890–c1915), interwar (c1915–c1940), postwar (c1940–1960) and late 20th century (1960–1989). It also includes architecture produced for a wide range of uses, including as domestic dwellings, churches, hospitals, and commercial and government buildings.
